Ashwin partnered with Riaz in 2016 to help build and develop Surya Capital and acts as Chief Investment Officer.  Ashwin will be based in Dubai for the coming years, building on the African interest in the Middle East.
Prior to Surya, Ashwin was for 2½ years, the Director of Private Equity for SGRF, the main Sovereign Wealth Fund of the Sultanate of Oman where he has been responsible for oversight of the entire private equity program covering infrastructure, venture capital and core private equity, deploying capital through funds and direct investments.  He was hired to design SGRF’s PE program strategy and tactics and was responsible for building the team.  Under his oversight SGRF developed a focused strategy around core themes including healthcare, food value chain, mining, and recorded its highest ever deployment to direct investments and PE funds in 2015.
Prior to this, Ashwin spent 12 years at Citi Venture Capital International (CVCI1) until mid-2013, as one of 2 partners based in London and co-heading the firm’s efforts in Central & Eastern Europe (CEE), Middle East & Africa.  During his tenure with CVCI, Ashwin was the lead or second transactor on some 14 deals, deploying c. $800 million of direct private equity investments across a variety of deal types (buyouts, growth capital, PIPEs etc.), sectors (including, retail, pharmaceuticals, FMCG, animal health, transport, leisure) and countries (Russia, Baltic States, Poland, Bulgaria, Israel).  During his time at CVCI, Ashwin served on the Board of several portfolio companies, including AS Tallink Group (an Estonian-listed cruise and ferry operator between Scandinavia and the Baltic States), Sanitas Group (CEE specialty pharma company ultimately sold to Valeant Pharmaceuticals), Huvepharma (a global niche player in livestock health).
Before CVCI, Ashwin worked for SG Asset Management in Paris & London in 2000 and 2001, as part of a team managing funds invested in listed and private equity in CEE.
He started his career with PricewaterhouseCoopers in London where he qualified as a Chartered Accountant.
Ashwin was educated at King’s College, University of Cambridge and graduated with an MA Honours (First Class) in Economics.  He is also a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales.
(1) CVCI was a Citigroup affiliated global private equity investor, focused on emerging markets; It became one of the largest emerging markets private equity investors with over c. $7 billion of assets under management; specializing in mid-market buyouts and partnership deals in emerging markets globally.  CVCI was affiliated to Citigroup until 2013.
